SOS Tobago Welcomes The Start of the 2005 Turtle Nesting Season |
March 1st 2005 marked the official close of the hunting season and Save Our Sea Turtles (SOS) Tobago spent the month busy getting ready for the start of turtle nesting with beach clean ups on the major nesting beaches, beach patrol training sessions and a "Welcome Turtle Party" to celebrate the turtles' return all in keeping with the SOS mission “to conserve Tobago’s sea turtles and their coastal and marine habitat through community based initiatives in research, education and eco-tourism”. .... more

Replenishing Florida's Beaches |
Now that four hurricanes have washed away miles and miles of Florida's
golden beaches, it's the taxpayers' turn to put them back. Already there
is talk of the state spending nearly $70 million, the federal government
kicking in $116 million and local seaside communities adding another $22
million for beach restoration. Because tourism is such a huge industry in

Following reports of turtle hunting at Kilygwyn in last week’s article, Environment TOBAGO and Save Our Sea Turtles (SOS) Tobago would like to remind the general public that while we are now in the ‘open’ hunting season, there are still restrictions on turtle hunting that apply.

Every year, many turtles are killed in Tobago to satisfy our seemingly endless appetite for ‘wildmeat’; in one week alone in 2003, three pregnant, female Leatherback turtles were slaughtered at Speyside, Bacolet and Turtle Beach, their carcasses left to rot in the sun.
