SOS IN RESEARCH

The SOS Beach Patrol Team originated in 2000 solely as a seasonal protective body in response to the illegal slaughtering nesting leatherbacks in the Black Rock area. Since then, the poaching situation has somewhat improved and the focus broadened to include more scientific research and monitoring both on the nesting beaches and at sea.

Leatherback Index Beach Project

Our signature project continues to be the highest priority for the beach patrol team. monitors turtle nesting activity nightly throughout the nesting season (March- July) on three beaches in southwest Tobago that have been identified as ‘index beaches’ for the critically endangered leatherback turtle.

Rural Beach Protection Project

We also monitor nesting and poaching activity on the northeastern end of the island.

Offshore Monitoring Project

Kilygwyn Green Turtle Project

National Sea Turtle Database Project

All population data collected is fed into a variety of international databases through WIDECAST (the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network).
